Folks, this diary is a reference diary that lists all the diaries published so far by the Yearly Kos Education Group, which is aptly titled: Education Uprising.
If you have missed any of these or would like to get caught up with the fullness of this project, I invite you below the fold to read the diaries and threads around these issues.
Is there anything more important in a democracy than the quality of the education we provide to children and citizens?
I think not.
Enjoy.
The charge of Education Uprising is to to reinvent the entire system of education. An impossible task to be sure, which is why the redoubtable TeacherKen has been chosen to lead up the effort. If anyone can do it, he can.
So, we began by having the eminent historian of education, Sherman Dorn, recapitulate several areas in the history of education in this country:
Part I examined the public purposes of education , at least as they were envisaged through time.
Part II examined the history of school bureaucracy. One of my favorite topics.
Part III examined the history of teaching.. A diary not to be missed, by the way.
Part IV examined the history of educational "oppportunity" in the United States. Surprise: some people are more equal than others.
Once we got the history behind us, we went on to look at the curriculum with the masterful help of Marion Brady, who has long championed curricular reform as the fundamental key to increasing educational engagement and achievement amongst students.
Last week, Ed upstart member Rheino held forth on the needs of students in today's educational system.
There's a lot more to come and I hope the larger Dkos community participates in and values the efforts of the Education Uprising group.
So far, we seem like distant warriors, hanging at the outskirts, hatching plans, gathered around a flaming barrel, talking about education. Will people invite us in? Listen to our ideas? Slap us on the back and put a scotch in our hand?
We're doing it for all of you...
